Liquid dosing of tin sulphate in cement plantsThere have already been a number of publications on the subject of manufacturing low-chromatecements in accordance with EC Directive 2003/53/EC. It is presupposed here that readers arefamiliar with the background of this directive for the avoidance of health-endangering chrome (VI)in cements and their preparation processes. Essentially, the directive stipulates that the content ofwater-soluble chromate has to be below 2 ppm.This aim can be achieved in different ways and by means of different chromate-reducing agents.Selection of the right chromate reducer and of the right input point are, how- ever, not within thescope of this article. Both subjects were comprehensively and sometimes also controversiallydiscussed in the past. so that several characteristic dosing principles were established.DASAG GmbH Verfahrenstechnik-Anlagenbau designed and installed the first dosing systems forchromate-reducing agents almost 10 years ago. The company was thus one of the pioneers forsuch dosing systems and has since gained a great deal of experience on this sector. Withoutexception, the first dosing systems - which were then still installed on the basis of voluntarycommitment by German cement manufacturers - used iron (II) sulphate-heptahydrate. However,experience soon revealed that this material had its disadvantages, which sometimes resulted inextremely problematic handling if the system was not suitably designed. Over the years furtherchromate reducers have been introduced, for instance iron (II) sulphate-monohydrate and tinsulphate in solid and liquid form. All these reducing agents have proven their validity on the market.It is the business of the plant owner to decide in favour of a particular reducing agent together withthe supplier of the dosing equipment. Selection of the dosing concept and of the input point completes the circle, whereby the cost factor naturally plays a decisive role in the decision-making process.On the basis of our longtime experience on the powder and granulate sector, DASAG is now alsopresent on the liquid chromate reducer sector. The following description relates to the fundamentalconcept of a system for dosing liquid tin sulphate that was installed at a plant owned by a leadingcement manufacturer. The system comprises two dosing lines.Knowledge of the employed liquid material is the main prerequisite for designing a liquid dosing system. Tin sulphate is generally a pseudoplastic dispersion, which places higher demands on the handling than a pure liquid does. To assure flowability, a limit has to be imposed on the total solids concentration. Ultimately, the important point is to find the optimum between the two parameters, because the solvent concentration is also limited by the economical size of container.
