Flushing the systemIf the system is shut down for lengthy periods of time it has to be flushed with a suitable cleaningagent (water being used in the described system). As long as solid material and solvent are in thepiping system, no solidification of material occurs.However, deposits of solid material may form and subsequently hamper restarting of the system.The flushing process is performed manually. The ball valves for flushing liquid intake are opened andthe dosing system is operated manually until the raw material dispersion is flushed out of the system.If necessary, it is possible to flush different sections of the system separately. In a similar manner thesystem is reactivated after a lengthy stoppage by displacing the flushing liquid from the system withthe raw material dispersion.Controlling the systemThe scope of supply of the dosing system includes a control cabinet with a PLC, in which all themotorized actuators, valves, measuring devices, indicators and switches are connected orinstalled. In addition to the indicators there is a visual display of operating and fault messages. Theprecise cause of any fault can be read off the display of the touch panel. All relevant operatingdata are transferred via an interface to the higher-level control system supplied by the customerand the necessary switching and control actions are then activated.ConclusionThe essential features of described system are its compact configuration and its simple andefficient mode of operation. Naturally, this is a significant advantage of liquid agent dosing. Thesystems allows great flexibility with regard to the raw materials and raw material containers thatcan be used. The control engineering and system capacity can be easily adapted to customers'individual requirements. However, as the raw material prices are relatively high the specialrequirements and conditions at customers' plants always determine whether liquid dosing systemsare employed. For this reason, no general and comparative evaluation of the different dosingprocesses is provided in this article. However, as a basic principle the following can be stated: In plants manufacturing mass-consumption products, favourably-priced iron sulphates will certainly continue to be used for chromate reduction. Cement manufacturers will mainly install a tin sulphate dosing system if their end customers intend to use the products for preparing - for example - high-quality, light-coloured plasters, adhesives or similar materials. While overdosing or non-uniform dosing of iron sulphates causes discolouration of the product, this cannot happen if tin sulphate is used.
